Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk manga by Shirow Masamune. it has been adapted into an anime television series spanning 52 episodes and a movie serving as the series finale; there are also 2 other movies that aren't related to the television series and are more similar to the manga source material. The story takes place in the future where technology has made it possible to have cybernetic bodies. However, crime has also become more advanced and a special government agency known as Section 9 grapples with cybercriminals. The main character is Major Motoko Kusanagi and it follows her exploits as an operative of Section 9 and deals with the ethical and philosophical questions posed by the advancements in technology. Shirow Masamune has also written Appleseed and Dominion Tank Police.
