I was wondering if anyone would like to share instances where they have found deeper meanings in manga or anime, or to show what myths or legends some artists may have used in writing them.
Well in Code Geass they use Arthurian legend alot. In the episode were C2 pilots the Gawain knightmare frame against Jeremiah Gottwald (ALL HAIL BRITAINIA!!!, i couldn't resist) they are inacting the story of Gawain and the green knight. The story goes something like the green knight comes into the courtroom and asks if someone will chop of his head and in a year the green knight will get to chop off the choppers head. Gawain rises to the challenge and he beheads the knight and the knight's body picks up the head and says see u in a year and rides off. Gawain makes his way to the green chapel were the knight is and he comes to a farm house. There he meets a farmer who says the chapel is down the road and since there is some spare time stay at his house. Gawain does it on the condition that he will give the farmer whatever he got that day. The farmer has a wife who seduces him but he just gets a peck on the cheek. So he kisses the farmer and they laugh. This happens a couple of more times until the day before the meeting. He again resists the wife but she doesn't want him to die so she gives him her garter which will act as a ward. He gives the farmer a kiss but not the garter. The day of the meeting Gawain goes to the green chapel and puts his head on the chopping block. The green knight appears and nicks Gawain and says this is for the garter. The color green in celtic and many mythologies deals with death and rebirth (think of a plants seed, it grows into a plant and then that plant leaves a seed as it dies and so on). So C2 is immortal, she has green hair. The knightmare frame is named after the knight of the round table Gawain. When she tries to deal the final blow to orange-kun, she says something like you're the last person i'd commit suicide with. Ultimately she survives the encounter with orange-kun. So I think that episode takes some symbolism from the old legend.
Full metal alchemist is based of of like the old ages when people supposedly actually used it to heal people and they also beleived in the philosopher's stone which Ed and Al seek, it is as the show says a tool to enhance one's alchemy abilities immencely. (On a side, The Philosopher's Stone is mentioned in Harry Potter except it is refered to as The Sorcorrer's Stone.)The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
alchemy as a healing agent is really prevalent in eastern culture. Taoism was started in China it teaches a healthy way to live and sometimes you take herbal conncontions. so Chinese alchemy likely sprang from Taoism, which is what I'm going to do in my FMA:Brotherhood fanfic with the Xing. :)
Cool so like is your fanfic posted on this site or like somewhere i could read it cause that sounds interesting. The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
i'm still in the process of writing it. i need to research some into chinese alchemy and stuff like the shikigami (demon puppets). it is going to take place during the second series, fma:brotherhood, so i'm watching that and fitting my story around there.
Dragon Ball is based off of the old Chinese story Journey to the west and the ecchi show ikki tousen is based off of the Chinese story Romance of the three Kingdoms. Hellsing is based off of Bram Stroker's Dracula.
some examples from dragon ball and journey of the west are there is a monkey king who rides a cloud and has a thing like the power pole. there is a pig character like oolong. aparantley journey to the west and romance of the three kingdoms are 2 of 4 books that are considered corner stones of chinese literature.
Inuyasha has many concepts like Taoism, Confuscianism and Buddhism incorporated in it. The whole story is about harmony, the need to restore the shikkon jewel back to its pure form. This might be seen as the Taoist principle known as wu'wei which is working in a way with nature. In some sects of Buddhism the monks act as healers or exorcits like Miroku and Japan's native religion of Shintoism can be seen in the anime. In the water god episode, the shrine is called a turney. And many religious sites are local like mountains so an example of this would be mt hakurei during the band of seven arc.
i didn't explain confuscianism in inuyasha. there are relationships that you must honor. father to son, older sibling to younger, spouse to spouse, neighbor to neighbor, and ruler to subject. a good ruler observes all these. so this is an observance of the caste system, so naraku would be a bad ruler. there is the story in...buddhism? about arjuna. his family is driven out of his kingdom and he befriends a neighboring people who will help to restore him to power and he doesn't know what to do. the blue skinned god, forget name at the moment, tells him something. arjuna takes it to heart and ends up killing everyone not just the new rulers because they didn't observe the relationships. so inuyasha's struggle against naraku ties into this notion of restoring order.
Wow Monsignor, your relly insightful so like how can I gather more info about stuff like this cause now I'm dying to know more legends and myths and folklore and just stuff like that. Please respond, thanks. The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
i learned alot about different world religions and mythology from taking classes at my community college. while i was doing those i began to draw parallels with some of the shows i was watching. you could also either go to your local library or somewhere like barnes and noble and look through their books for something that interests you. one thing i like to do is just aimlessly browse through wikipedia. if you go on wikipedia you could check the sources they used like i was interested in the ugandan dictator idi amin and i got a book called state of blood by henry kyemba from looking at wikipedia.
some other subjects that tie in to this theme are anthropology and history. this to can help put some things into perspective about another culture.
i learned a lot from your posts
ur welcome :) i watch alot of anime and sometimes i recognize something from classes i've taken. it really is interesting where authors take their inspiration from.
i know i posted this along time ago, in gundam wing there is zechs and nuen. these sound like the german words for 69. if u take ur head out of the gutter it'll look like a yin yang which is the pairing of opposites.
Did you know that the movie Princess Mononoke was about the advancement of the west and the distruction of nature it did Zombaukto Clan is cool Join
i knew it had a enviromentally friendly theme and it warned about the dangers of industrialization but i didn't connect it to the west, so obvious now lol.
it mentioned west like 8 times and it aslso has a message to treat people with diseases with respect.... At least that was what i got with the lepper part The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
outlaw star is loosely based off of robert louis stevensons treasure island.
the canons on the strike freedom in gundam seed destiny and the flames behind shinji's evangelion in neon genesis evangelion are representations of the highest tiers of angels. seraphim is an angel that purifies with flame. in the hellboy novel as in hell as on earth the seraphim are agents of heavens divine wrath.
arn't angels evil in the show
The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
basically this is what i've come up with for the story of the show. in wikipedia it says a game has this but it may or may not be canon, there was an ancient race who seeded the universe with white and black moons and they populated the universe but on earth they both crash landed. one created the angels the other humans (so one moon would be the place nerv is built on, the other i think is the moon). the lance of longinus (named after the soldier who pierced christ's side) is used to control the angels. anyways in 1947 the dead sea scrolls were uncovered and some secret was in it. the secret was if humanity was to evolve it would have to destroy the angels. so the secret agencies of seele, gehrin, and later nerv are trying to eradicate the angels using the biotechnology created by the angels known as evangelions. so technically the angels and even people are angels, i think in the series the angel known as adam is the progenitor of the angels and lilith is the progenitor of humans also known as lilim.
so wait whered that evil kid come in that killed himself and screwd the series over for us and gave that kid years of torment and dispare The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
kawrou is the human equivalent of the angel adam, like rei is the human equivalent of the angel lilith. i didn't really like kawrou when i watched the series but i really liked him in the movie death and rebirth. i think it really brought something to his character.
Before he died!
See know you know what I felt like whenI watched the last season of the show
i liked the show up until the last two episodes. i can't wait for the new series to be released on dvd. i missed the first movie in theators because i was away when it was playing in san diego so i'll have to wait until x-mas for the first movie of the new tetraology. it is supossed to be easier for none hardcore fans to understand and is quite different. kawrou makes a cameo in the first film, i don't think asuka makes an appearance until the second.
the word evangelion is a misintrepretation of the greek euaggelion which means the "good news" or something like announcing and the angels are the ones doing it. so neon genesis is new beginning add evangelion and that is why the title is that. also about the lance of longinus. longinus pierces jesus is the side like where the liver is. in mythology the iver is believed to have regenerative powers (which we now know is true). one example of this in mythology is the story of prometheus who was a titan who sided with zeus. he loved people and was called to arbitrate a discussion. the people wanted to know which part of a sacrificed animal they should keep and which to give to zeus. one was all the meat and the other was bones. prometheus stuffed the bones into the stomach sac, disguising it, and let zeus pick. zeus picked the bones and prometheus laughed behind his back. zeus then took away fire from humans. prometheus then snuck fire to the humans but was punished by zeus by getting tied to a rock and a vulture would each day eat the liver which would then regrow. so it has regenerative powers and u can see this when the lance is removed from lilith in the anime when the body immediatly begins to regrow.
the end is not Good News
well in the end shinji and asuka are the first humans to forsake the human instrumentality project. in time other people will begin to reform their bodies from the sea of LCL. i choose to intrepret the final line of the movie as asuka has morning sickness. anno hideaki asked the seiyu what she thought when he gave her some scenario and she said that, so that part i don't like in the english dubb because it didn't translate. so the human race is beggining again, happy happy joy joy?
eating the meat without cooking it is like being an animal, eating the raw bloody steaks so that is why zeus took the fire.
in Gundam 00 the newer model piloted by Tieria is also named the Seraphim.
in many anime, there are characters who are either transexual, androgenous or transvestites. this is seen in many cultures. in some polysnesian island cultures some males are raised as females and have an honored place in the social structure. In Roman Mythology, Tiresias is a wise man and as he is walking through the forest he sees 2 snakes and strikes them with a stick. this turns him into a woman and he is one for the next seven years until he sees the snakes again and strikes them changing him back. he later becomes an oracle. basically people who are like this are seen as having a revered place in their society, so that is probably why they appear frequently is anime: Kamatari Honjo of the Juppongatana from Rurouni Kenshin, Envy the Jealous/Homunculi from Fullmetal Alchemist, Luppi the Sexta Espada in Bleach, the Innovators from Gundam 00, Jakotsu of the Band of Seven from Inuyasha and so on.
a third eye is seen as a sign of enlightenment. hiei from yu yu hakusho and tien shinhan from dragon ball have third eyes. the loss of the third eye may then be a sign of ignorance. in the end of evangelion when the mass produced evangelion are crucified and rei grows into the giant an eye grows onto her forehead but then is put out. this may tie into shinji ikari's belief in the negative aspects of the human instrumentality project.
in the movie Conqueror of Shamballa, Edward Elric is in our time line in 1921 and stumbles onto the occult Thule society and the rise of the Nazi Party (during the failed putsch attempt). They plan to use a gateway to steal secrets from the land of Shamballa. Shamballa is a reference to Shambhalla or the fictionalized western version Shangri La, a utopia of enlightened people hidden away in Tibet. Coincidentally, the Nazi's actually did fund expeditions to the east in the 1930's to gather info. on the so called Arayan race by tracing the Indo-Iranian people known as the Aryans (mainly for propaganda purposes to try to legitimize claims). Anyways the place is a mythic civilization, like Thule which is another civilization believed to be around Greenland or Iceland either sunken or buried in the earth. this corresponds with some theories on where the lost civilization of Atlantis is. however there is a mysterious underwater "structure" off the coast of Japan that is believed to be a pyramid. So advanced extinct civilizations are a main stay in most cultures mythology.
i was thinking about the homunculi and their moniker's of the seven deadly sins. then i remembered the phrase sins of the father, father is the guy who created the homunculi in brotherhood. i think the ouroboros tattoo of the homunculi is a reference to the mark of cain, which might've been a tribal tattoo and the mark granted him some protection."Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over," and God "set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him" (Gen. 4:15).
in the gothic horror frenzy known as hellsing, the paladin alexander anderson is given the nail of st. helena. this is named after the mother of the emperor constantine who traveled to jerusalem and found a site believed to be the place where christ was crucified and where he was buried. there is a church built on the spot today known as the church of the holy sepulchre.
i like my trinity blood boxset, in the special features they tell u about names, dates, church references etc. that helped to make the show possible.
I never really got what it was about
trinity blood takes place in the future after another world war of apocalyptic proportions. some people escape in rocket ships and travel to the red planet mars. there the colonists pick up nano-machines that turn them into vampires. they return to earth where the catholic church has become a beacon of hope. this starts another war but eventually there is an uneasy peace. the main character abel nightroad is a higher breed of vampire that preys on other vampires and he works for the church because of a sin he has committed.
what sin and and Why is kane evil i know it deals with the bible with kane and able but ester were does she fit in The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
esther is the heir to the throne of albion which the order of Rosenkreuz is using to try to start a war. in the final episodes of the series there is a flashback to when abel and cain are with the other crusnik vampires and abel seems to hate humans and cain likes them. it really isn't explained in the anime series but the death of lilith the prototype crusnik causes the brothers switch sides. so the sin probably refers to that incident.
Trinity blood do that one
the vampires in trinity blood have adopted the name Methuselah, which is derived from the oldest man in the bible who lived 969 years. the girl esther is named after a persian queen and the name means star (she has a birthmark in the shape of a star).
oh ok which character do you like i like able in his demon form complete demon form after he died demon form The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
i pretty much like everyone. i like abel, caterina the popes sister, petro from the inquistiors, esther, and Ashte the countess. they're probably my core fav.s
oh ok did you know that they are making a trinity blood movie The Greatest Clan In Death and Universe... The Zombaukto Clan
