here is some information on the backstories of hellsing characters taken from their prototypes and then my own added opinion. doc is based off of avondale napyeer, his prototype. he was a confedant of hitler and believed in the occult. this is probably why he was selected for operation 666. his occult experiments resulted in the quatum cat schrodinger. captain is hans gunsche, who either belonged to the stormtroopers (SA) or the ss. He is dressed as a SA but there is a reference to malmedey's massacre which was executed by the ss against p.o.w.s. in his prototype his is helping out some muslims so maybe this ties into the filler anime about incognito. his werewolf origin is never explained, see gaiaonline for a really cool fan profile. major montana max and rip van winkle (she probably got her gun from alucard completing the story of the opera she likes) are the only other ones who actually were nazi's during the war.

then they used the odessa ratlines possibly through italy by bishop alois hudal (remember the iscariot priest who is interrogated by bishop enrico maxwell?). they go to south america, brazil. there were many fascist regiemes in south america like peron in argentina (andrew lloyd weber made the musical evita, she was his wife). tubalcaine alahambra was probably an ambassador from one of those fascist regiemes. luke and jan valentine were the sons of nazis and grew up learning about alucard. they don't seem to have nazi ideals and are living bohemian livestyle. i think they are also half brothers. they were based off of there prototypes the hellman brothers. you can see them as this incarnation in i think volume 7 of hellsing when they slay seras victoria's parents.

pip bernadotte is based off of pip bernadotte. this pip is probably his grandfather and dies while fighting the major montana max. i haven't found it in any fan thing but there is a phrase pip says in french and part of it is uganda. so i think he either served for idi amin dada during 1971-1979 like bob astles (nicholas garrigan in last king of scotland) or maybe he fought in the tanzanian invasion that ended his reign. alexander anderson's prototype was a hitman who stole herion and hid in a church.
