Ghost Talker's Daydream
Submitted: Thu, 10/16/2008 - 10:54Author: Kaiji Tang
I love manga, I really do. And even though I view most newer titles through the jaded lens of an elderly relative who just wants to be taken off the damn life support, there are one or two things that will every once in awhile hook me like bitter World of Warcraft players to Age of Conan. I am speaking of course of today's review topic, Ghost Talker's Daydream. I should mention that at the time I'm writing this, Dark Horse Comics has not actually released the first volume yet. However once it is released in the very near future, I expect all of you to shamble out from your caves and sniff out this title like the undead to a delicious platter of fresh brains. Why you may ask? Well if you are a red blooded man-thing like myself (and I expect you are, otherwise are you single and can I get your phone number?), you'll want to pay attention to the following description of the main character: Saiki Misaki is an albino Necromancer who works as a Dominatrix while happening to be a virgin. If more than a few of those select words you just read peaks your interest then this is the manga for you.
Though a fanservice manga, Ghost Talker's Daydream is surprisingly deep and touching. The manga is split into chapters, which all contain their little stand alone side stories for the most part and is told in the fashion of those old "Tales of Horror" comics you read when you were a little kid. While the subject matter of the stories are very adult, the stories themselves are surprisingly well written and engaging, almost making you forget that nudity is splattered across the manga every few pages. I'm not complaining by the way. The art is rich and enticing and compliments the main story extremely well. If I had anything bad to say about the manga, it'd be that the stories are too damn short. It seems whenever it starts to really rope you in, it climaxes and finishes early leaving you sitting there with the book in your hands wondering if it was something you did to make it finish so early. I could make a relationship joke at this point…and I will.
Overall you'll find the manga to be fairly excellent, especially if you like your reading material a bit more mature than most others. This title takes things like orgasms and scatology (you heard me) into hilarious running jokes and that my friend is hard to do tastefully. It combines the best elements of fan service and gritty horror story telling in a way that just flat out works. The first volume will be released later in July and the second will be released some time in October. Until next time, remember to tip your Dominatrix.
